New Year Brings Change: “Love in Action”

It's almost the end of January—way past timely commentary on the New Year and change. But it is still January, the first month of 2013, so before the weeks slip away and I find myself even farther behind the power curve, I'm taking this opportunity to lay down my attempt to be “reporterly” and share my pondering heart explaining the new focus and name of this blog.

It all started with this question and thought process:

What’s in a name?

Names are identity, so we usually choose them with great thought–or at least we try. I’m thankful I no longer have the responsibility of naming children. My children are 21, 19, and 15, so there’s no turning back on that now. They are stuck with what we gave them unless they change it later.

Some of us like our names, and some of us don’t. I’m one of those people not quite sure which name to use because my name has evolved over time. One friend introduced me to everyone (including my husband) twenty-three years ago using my nickname, and it stuck. With each family move I’ve had a chance to reclaim my given name, Andrea, but that name just doesn’t seem to fit anymore accept when I go home, and even then, it doesn’t sound quite right. I guess you could say I’m conflicted. Still in the search to find myself. “Will the real Andy…mmmm…Andrea Lee please stand up?”

The naming of this blog was no different. “Walk the Talk”was a good name, but it's a little too dogmatic for me and just doesn’t fit my focus or heart for 2013.

This year, rather than writing about Christian service ministries and nonprofits only, I want to expand this blog to the “good stuff” the diverse communities of faith in Wilmington are doing. Christians don’t have the corner on philanthropies, though it is a cornerstone of our faith. Christians are taught that “faith without deeds is dead” (James 2:26), and one of the two greatest commandments Jesus taught was to love others as ourselves, but other religions share the doctrine of helping our fellow man.

My focus this year is “Love in Action” which is the new name of the blog.

I hope to “catch” people in the act of helping others and capture the image of their “love in action” through the written word as well as photography. I also want to give a shout-out to you, the readers, to let me know of individuals or groups of the faith community demonstrating love to those in need.

Snap a photo with your phone. Send it in! I’ll post it. Just remember to give me your name so that I can give you the credit. Send any stories or photos to: .

“Love in Action.”

What memory or picture comes to your mind when you read those three words—this new name? Do you like the change? I would love to hear your thoughts.

Andy, I love the change. Love is a verb, and a manifestation of our faith that the world can see. Talk is cheap, as the saying goes. Looking forward to reading your Love in Action posts in 2013. Thank you for often putting feet to your faith yourself and setting the example.
