Editor's Note: Writer David Scott is responding to a recent Associated Press report of a proposed bill to allow Bible classes in public schools.
Can we now assume that, if the NC Legislature passes this bill allowing the teaching of the Bible in public schools, they could refuse a similar bill to teach the Quran or other religious text?
This could open up Pandora's Box for Christian fundamentalists, creating a cudgel that could be used against them and their intolerance.
Is it not more appropriate to teach comparative religion in our schools and, thereby, hopefully encourage more knowledge and enlightenment?

I don’t know the answer to this question but have some relevant experience to share. Many years ago I was assigned to teach a yearlong course on Bible Literature as an elective for juniors and seniors in a public high school in Connecticut. Of course, it was not about religion or what to believe.
The purpose was not to teach “world religions,” although that may be a noble goal. But because so many kids today have no background in the Bible they are clueless when it comes to the many allusions we have to the stories and sayings of the Bible. Kids were in a sense culturally illiterate when they read other famous works, saw movies and even listened to rock music. (There is a time, turn, turn, turn, and season for every purpose, e.g.)
One student even asked me, “What’s this thing about an apple? Was that a bad thing to eat? I’ve heard something about it.” Many did not know who the Good Samaritan was, or what the Prodigal was all about. Wow.
I’m not saying it’s the place of the public school to teach about the Bible in a religious sense, but because parents are not doing so, some felt the schools needed to, or their students would be intellectually disadvantaged.
