Is an Israeli religious revolution needed?

Editor's Note: Blogger David Scott is writing in response to this recent article by the Associated Press: "Orthodox rabbi seeks Israeli religious revolution."

I think this rabbi is onto something important.

I don't pretend to understand Israeli politics, but similar to our own government, it allows religion to have too much influence, especially the religious extremists.

Most Americans do not realize that Jewish society is predominantly secular.  The stereotype of Israelis in American minds are the hard-core religious--anything but the truth.  I think/hope that the Israeli society has more sense than to let the religious tail wag the secular dog.

I hope this rabbi's moderate views will find a following in Israel to soften the hard-line approach taken by Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who seems determined to agitate the Middle East into a regional war, pulling us into the fray because of our loyalty to this country whose intentions are sometimes suspect.
