VIEWPOINTS: If the world really will end this month, how will you prepare?

Amanda.Greene@ReligionNews.com

Is it the end of the world as we know it?

The Mayans predicted the Earth would meet it's end on Dec. 21, 2012, just a few weeks away.

Some fundamentalist Christians and some other sects are preparing for the end of the world, celebrating, stockpiling food and supplies. But Simon Martin, of Penn Museum, said 2012 end of world predictions are based only on a small piece of the Mayan calendar. At a talk during the Religion Newswriters Association annual conference in October, he noted that the Mayans' thousands of ancient documents only mention 2012 twice.

Some Christians believe the date could be the second coming of Jesus Christ.

But Mayan scholars don't believe Dec. 21 will be the end just yet. NASA scientists agree.

Do you believe that's true? And if so, what would you do to prepare for the end?

Use Dec. 21 predictions as a turning point. Not the end.

Melody Gordon says: "With all endeavoring for the good of all and not the good of one, end of time scenarios will be extinct."
