A television series based on a gospel cable channel stage play will kick off filming in Wilmington this week, according to a series spokeswoman.

“For Richer or Poorer” is a gospel play series based on a TV movie of the same name that aired on the family-friendly GMC cable channel earlier this year, GMC spokeswoman Chelsye J. Burrows said.

The new six-episode series, produced by Wilmington-based Swirl Films, is a continuation of several wedding vow-themed productions that have aired on the network in 2012.

Inspired by the vows that bind a couple in matrimony, each GMC nuptial series features a different cast and new storylines all tied into a wedding vow theme.

The productions typically feature a prominent U.S. gospel singer, Burrows said. Casting information for the series was not available Tuesday.

The network’s TV movie “For Richer or Poorer,” which aired in April, starred Rockmond Dunbar (“Soul Food”), R&B singer LeToya Luckett (“Tremé”), Angell Conwell (“The Young and the Restless“) and gospel music singer Karen Clark Sheard — a four-time Grammy Award-winning singer, musician and songwriter.

The film follows a couple of four years who question their commitment as they experience financial hardships, according to the network.

A local casting agent, Vanessa Neimeyer, is hiring some speaking roles and extras for the project, according to her Facebook page.

A casting call posted on the agent’s page Monday called for a speaking role for a curvy, petite black woman between the ages of 25 and 32. Those interested are asked to submit an email with their resume, photographs, a head shot, bust and waist measurements, and contact information to gmcextras@gmail.com with the subject line “Layla role.”

For information about casting for the project, visit the agent’s Facebook page.
