On Feb. 1, a devastating fire destroyed the home of Hampstead residents Bud and Judy Hinnant.

Judy was seriously injured from smoke inhalation, and she was immediately taken to UNC-Hospital in Chapel Hill. Judy is now back in Hampstead slowly recovering.

The fire demolished the Hinnant’s home so Bud and Judy are currently staying with Judy’s parents. In the blaze, the Hinnants lost most of their possessions. The Hinnants had no insurance for their residence. In addition, the couple's pets - three dogs and two cats - perished in the fire.

In order to assist the Hinnant family, a barbecue fundraiser will be held 11 a.m.- 3p.m. March 9 at the Topsail Baptist Church, 18885 U.S. Hwy. 17 N. Barbecue plates, with all the trimmings, will be served along with baked goods and soft drinks. Tickets will be available at the door for $8 per plate. Eat-in or take-out.

At noon, several local bands will perform during the event. The organizers of this fundraiser are asking citizens to rally around the Hinnants during this most disturbing time.

To make a monetary donation to help the couple, please make checks payable to Hampstead United Methodist Church with a notation “Hinnant Family.” You may mail your contribution to Hampstead United Methodist Church, 15395 Highway 17 North, Hampstead 28443.
