For Christians, Ash Wednesday is a the beginning of a 40-day penetential period of Lent repenting of sins and recognizing Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, culminating in Easter on March 31. Many Christian traditions mark the heads of their believers with an ash cross with an ash paste made from the burnt palm fronds of last year's Palm Sunday as a physical reminder of humanity's sinful nature.
