Ash Wednesday in the Cape Fear region

For Christians, Ash Wednesday is a the beginning of a 40-day penetential period of Lent repenting of sins and recognizing Jesus' sacrifice on the cross, culminating in Easter on March 31. Many Christian traditions mark the heads of their believers with an ash cross with an ash paste made from the burnt palm fronds of last year's Palm Sunday as a physical reminder of humanity's sinful nature. 

Take a peek into services at two Cape Fear area churches on Ash Wednesday -- St. Matthew's Evangelical Lutheran Church and 5th Avenue United Methodist Church.

But their observance of the 40-day period in which many Christians abstain from worldly desires in a bid to come closer to God has upset some atheists who say borrowing religious traditions is antithetical to nontheism.
