The thing that bothered me about holding everyone's presents till the evening of Dec. 24 was (of course) the Christmas symbolism — the very idea that we would try to keep in sync with the Christmas calendar.

The only reminder that we were in the desert was the light, an intense white light that is completely different from what we're used to on the East Coast. I always notice it as soon as we step out of the airport terminal — it feels as if we're stepping into a different version of the world.
