Poll: Do you say "bless your heart?"
It's a Southern thing to say - "Bless your heart."
Do you say it?
Do you mean it like it says?
Or does it hold another meaning?
Wilmington author Celia Rivenbark wrote a book in 2000 about that and other Southernisms and habits called Bless Your Heart, Tramp.
Her tag line: "If you’re a Southerner, you’ll understand. If you’re not – well, God help you."

Perhaps this Ohio girl has a touch of the South in her. I’ve always said, “Why bless your heart!”

I’ve learned from Nan Graham and Celia Rivenbark that it’s a way of softening the blow when you really want to say, “You’re to be pitied,” or “You really screwed up.”

I’ve always had a fondness for “bless your heart”. Like “bless you” when someone sneezes, but far more versitile!
