How do you feel about the election of the first black Southern Baptist Convention president?

Poll: How do you feel about the election of the first black Southern Baptist Convention president?

  • Well, it's about time!
  • Great! But when are Southern Baptists going to accept more female leadership?
  • It doesn't matter to me. I'm not Southern Baptist.

This week, the Southern Baptist Convention met in New Orleans and voted to elect the Rev. Fred Luter as its first African-American president.

Among black Baptist churches, the reaction was supportive, if incredulous.

But some groups wonder if Luter can do much to affect change in the denomination with just a two-year term.

How do you view this week's SBC decision?

  1. There seems to be very few choices in the poll.  It is as if your agenda is to use this opportunity to push racism and feminism in the Christian Church but not the leadership of the Lord Jesus or to gain an accurate understanding of how people feel about the vote.

“Well, it’s about time!”  Is a racist statement and has absolutely nothing to do with the leadership of Jesus in the Church.  It simply implies that people should be put into office in the Christian Church on the basis of race and not upon the selection of the Holy Spirit of God.  If God should selects a person and they are African, well and good. But if man selects a person that is African for any reason other than God led them to do that, then it is wrong and a rejection of God’s leadership.

“Great! But when are Southern Baptists going to accept more female leadership?”  People who think like this obviously have not read the Bible.  When the Apostle Paul dealt with leadership he clearly said that women were not to be placed in authority.  Paul went back to the creation account to show that God crated man, masculine singular, gave him the responsibility and authority to take care of the garden and after a while God created woman from man, for man, to assist man to do that which God had created man to do.  Paul continues to show proof of male leadership to the believers when he speaks of the woman as first to sin.  The reality is that when Eve sinned, nothing happened.  It was only when man sinned that it all came crashing down.  It is by one man’s disobedience that sin came into the World and death by sin and not because of woman.  The responsibility and authority for leadership was with Adam, masculine singular and not Eve.  Eve’s punishment dealt with one gender while Adam’s, all of Creation.  This has never changed.  God identifies himself as he and the Holy Spirit as he and sent his son and not his daughter to deal with the problem because of the order of authority and leadership that He created from the beginning.  If those who oppose God in this were to repent and turn to God, He would gladly heal them and enlighten them to their role in Creation.

“It doesn’t matter to me. I’m not Southern Baptist.”  Okay, but if you are a Christian it should matter.  Leadership of any Christian Denomination will sway people to God or away from God and effect the Entire Christian Community.  No matter what the Denomination you belong to, if you are a Christian, you should be praying for the Lord to guide the Leadership of the Church, World Wide.

Why not add:  “It doesn’t matter to me.  I’m not a Christian.”?  This question would distinguish between the I am not a Baptist and the I am not a Believer that have or will vote in this category.  It would distinguish between the unbeliever and the lack of interest Christians of other Denominations have concerning the vote.  More and better choices produce a clearer picture than the three choices presented.  The choices presented seem to promote racist and feminist agendas in the Church more than an honest understanding of how people feel about the vote of an African American Christian to the top Leadership Spot in the Southern Baptist Convention.

By the way:  Congratulations to Rev Fred Luter.  May God give you the Wisdom and strength of Character to follow Him and to lead in these very difficult times.

  2. No agenda, Mike. I was just representing a few views on the issue in a conversational way. But maybe you bring a good point about not being too flip with my poll answers. I’ll consider that in the future. Thanks for reading!
